UCLA Powell Library Study
Design Study
The design study for Powell Library at USC sought to envision how this historic campus landmark could adapt to meet the future needs of its users. With a focus on anticipating changes over the building’s next life cycle, the study began by assessing current space utilization, architectural character, and opportunities for enhancement. Central to the process was robust engagement with the campus community: a series of public workshops invited students, faculty, staff, and broader stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the vision for the library’s future.
Through these workshops, surveys, and design sessions, participants explored how learning, research, and collaboration might continue to evolve. The study identified a strong demand for highly flexible, multifunctional spaces, areas that can seamlessly transition between quiet study, group work, and event hosting. Preferences leaned toward modular furniture and adaptive layouts to accommodate a variety of activities and user groups throughout the day.
Another major theme was the integration of advanced technology. Workshop attendees expressed a clear desire for increased digital infrastructure, including makerspaces, digital labs, and robust wireless connectivity, ensuring Powell Library remains a technologically relevant resource. Spaces that fostered community were also seen as essential, whether through active commons for group projects and lectures or designated zones that encouraged interdisciplinary connections.
Well-being and inclusivity emerged as guiding priorities. The community advocated for universally accessible design, the incorporation of wellness spaces, and environments that accommodate both focused, secluded study as well as relaxation. Sustainability was another key consideration; participants championed long-term adaptability through eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and layouts designed to respond to future shifts in how libraries are used.
Drawing on input from the workshops and research into national and international library trends, the study produced a comprehensive report. This deliverable synthesized public feedback, assessed the building’s existing assets, and outlined both immediate and long-term recommendations for Powell Library. The result is a forward-thinking set of guidelines and conceptual strategies, ensuring Powell Library remains a flexible, vibrant, and inclusive center for learning, connection, and innovation for decades to come.
